We’re big in Germany

Germany, Press, Spiegel
.
In the autumn when the idea of atheist buses first took off the major press coverage outside the UK was in the USA, Spain and Italy. This time around the picture is rather different – at the launch event and subseqently the campaign has been receiving excellent coverage in Germany. A long piece today at Spiegel Online has been so popular that it’s the ‘Most Wanted’ article on their website.
There was also plenty of coverage in RTL Aktuell and RTL Nachtjournal.

I want his in Berlin!
I’ll definitely donate.
BTW: This is my 5th or 6th attempt to post a comment. The “Leave a Reply” function has serious layout problems in IE and Firefox (BAD).

Well done! Hope to see some buses with this message in Germany soon.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:03
Great campaign! A vectorized version of campaign bus slogen would be nice, so everybody could create his own “merchandise” products (posters, badges,…). Keep up the good work, M.

Just read this in Spiegel-Online. As a typical german killjoy I have to add, that I would have preferred: “There’s probably no God – YOU are accountable for your action”.

“In the autumn when the idea of atheist buses first took off the major press coverage outside Europe was in the USA, Spain and Italy.”
So Spain and Italy are now outside Europe are they?
I wondered what that terrible noise was last night. It must have been those damned tectonic plates shifting. I had assumed it was the beans I had for supper.

@Simon Bishop – oops! That was a rather late blog post last night. Now corrected..
January 9th, 2009 at 11:01
@David (#2) – Thanks for the link to the Google translation, it’s hilarious!
January 9th, 2009 at 11:07
Love this in the Google translation:
As a slogan for the bus, it proposes: “There is probably no God. Stop, you have to worry and rejoice in life.”
It’s the complete opposite!

I think this message is not really about Atheism. It is a message to people to enjoy what they have and not worry about what they can’t control. Atheism is too absolute a stance to afford a ‘probably’ in the message. I love the call to focus on what is important – your life. Live it well. And more importantly, fight for certainties not for probabilities – religion inspired wars should end, as should poverty and malnourishment.

I alway thought that one the benefits of atheism was that there was no missionary work.
Seeing you guys,. I guess I was wrong..

Hi,
I´m a 23 year old student of European Media and live in Berlin. I would love to support an atheist campaign in Germany and especially in my city.
Right now a church-campaign called “pro reli” is collecting signatures for the re-introduction of religion classes in public schools. (A short radio-reportage by Deutsche Welle: http://www.ardmediathek.de/ard/servlet/content/1125236)
The whole city is covered with their slogans of “free choice” (http://www.pro-reli.de) and an atheist campaign would certainly add to the discussion.
So please contact me.
Many regards from Berlin
Florian

I want this in Dresden!
January 9th, 2009 at 15:10
Hi, I´m from Berlin and a devoted atheist. I saw the reportage of the buses on RTL yesterday. It´s really great!! I hope the campaigns comes to Germany too.
And the translated text is bad translated, typical for translation generators.
Believe me the german text is good.
And no prejudices against Germans please, we´re nice and we´re Atheists like you!!

maybe we should try to do it in several cities. with good organization this would really appear to a lot more people then. already some people from several cities here said they would like to help.
an agency to set up the designs and slogans seems also to be there as stated in the last post. so it should probably fit together nicely!
January 10th, 2009 at 19:19
You are probably mad!
THERE IS NO GOD!
Thanks for the campaign!

The Brights Germany also would like to join the campaign in germany. There ist a huge support for the idea here but the official representative organisations for reasonists maintain a low profile.
We just need fundraising opportunity immediatly! If you are skilled in the issue, please contact us!

There was also a report in “Orientierung” on ORF 2 ( Austrian national public service broadcaster) today. They also published a short article on their webpage http://religion.orf.at/projekt03/tvradio/orientierung/or_090111_fr.htm (Atheisten in der Offensive: „Gottlos ist geil“)

I’d just like to draw your attention to this:
“The Atheist’s Guide To Christmas” is the UK’s first atheist charity book, featuring contributions from Richard Dawkins, Derren Brown, Ben Goldacre, Simon Singh, Claire Rayner, David Baddiel, Charlie Brooker and many more. It’s been edited by Ariane Sherine, the creator of the hugely successful Atheist Bus Campaign. It’s out on Oct 1st and all royalties are going to the HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust. Please pre-order now:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Atheists-Guide-Christmas-Ariane-Sherine/dp/0007322615/
The Atheist’s Guide is a mix of humorous and poignant contributions from over 40 various prominent atheists. It’ll make an ideal Christmas gift for your atheist friends. Your religious friends will love it too, or, even better, it’ll put them in a foul mood for Xmas! So a win-win situation! More info on the Facebook group:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=128903634833
Your support will not only maintain the profile of atheism in the UK, it will also help raise funds for the very worthy THT charity. Please note that the contributors, and Ms Sherine, have waived payment for their considerable input into the “Guide”.
Thank you, and please pass this message on to everyone you know!!
[My apologies if you already know about the Guide!]
