Congratulations! It’s great to see them in real life (on my computer screen).

A suggestion about the new donation drive; i think adding an explicit link to the justgiving page of the new BHA campaign would be helpful; so people can find out something about what theyre being asked to donate to! (clicking ‘donate’ takes you to that page, but this isn’t a very intuitively labelled button for people who just want more information first).

Great stuff. Will there also be some sort of event for the public, or was it only possible to do a press launch? Anyway, wonderful that it is going out across so many places and in so many ways. I like the extra ads with the famous people’s quotes — I think the Adams one is a classic. I am less sure about the “personal God” one — Good to tell people that Einstein was not a theist, as religious people sometimes try to claim him, less sure about this choice of quote, as in my experience many people do not know what the expression “a personal God” means. — i.e. a God that is a “person” – a separate being with likes and dislikes, who answers prayer and intervenes in the world, as opposed to one that is some vague “force” or “higher power”or a personification of nature or the laws of physics etc. People often seem to think it means something like “a God that is personal to me” or that “I personally beleve in” or something.

In regards to the comment on the bus “THERE’S PROBABLY NO GOD”, I would have to disagree with that statement because there is a God, the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, however, I do agree with your comment, “there is no need to worry”, as we can put our trust in God who will take away our worries through His son Jesus Christ, & the last comment “and enjoy your life”, God does want us to enjoy our lives, He’s the one that put us here….

I feel so proud of everyone – this such an achievement so thanks to all who made it possible with donations and organisation. A public launch event of some sort would be good though if it could be organised!

There is a God! What’s the problem bout believing in it?
I’m not that type of christian that say YOUR GONNA BURN IN HELL… I can’t really believe that its gonna happen to atheists.
but WHY try to keep believers away from it…
I’ll pray for you and that youll find him as well!

MaxX: It’s very kind of you to say that you’re “not that type of Christian that says YOU’RE GONNA BURN IN HELL”.

Unfortunately, most of your religious leaders do say just that. The adverts are not trying to turn believers – they’re designed to give atheists some respite from the threats alluded to in the Christian ads, church notice boards, Christian-run kindergartens, etc.

You see, MaxX, religions that threaten “damnation in everlasting fire” to non-believers tend to retain their flocks better than those that just offer reasoned discussion. It’s called the “fear-factor”.

    Tim Clague Says:

I have been following with amusement the recent stories around the ‘probably no god’ bus advertisements and the Christian Voice response. The reason for the amusement is that I created a short film featuring a similar situation just 2 weeks ago.

I am a film maker and every year I make a film, on Boxing Day itself, that I upload and email out to friends, family and colleagues. Being an atheist myself I try to create ‘alternative’ Christmas time greetings. This year I went for a comedy angle and had a local vicar getting hassle from the ASA as his poster stating that “Remember at Christmas that Jesus is the way to heaven” can’t be factually proven. This, at the time, I felt was hilariously outrageous.

Whilst I choose to approach the same issue from the other side (having the ASA investigate the church rather the atheists) I was still amazed to see that this came true just 2 weeks later. Unbelievable.

Here is a link to the film. It is only 4 minutes long and feel free to forward to others who may fancy a chuckle.

    @Richard W:

You said: “The adverts are not trying to turn believers – they’re designed to give atheists some respite from the threats alluded to in the Christian ads…”

Well when it’s just designed to make atheist that are scared cuz of stupid threats feel better why is it so radical?!
I mean it says “PROBABLY NO GOD”
I don’t think that’s a way to do that ‘cuz you’re just offending the people that believe…

Instead of just saying somethin neutral like “Enjoy your life – don’t worry about what people tell you to live like…”

I think believing should something personal.

I also think that it’s stupid from christians to put up these threatening ads! – That doesn’t even exist in my country [Germany/Poland]
And here in the USA where I am now either. You just don’t talk about something like that in such a public way.
And if you want to convince somebody, THREATENING is not a really good way to do it… You talk to your friends or people that you think need God in their lives and just approach it slowly – pray for them, tell them about Jesus etc.
I think they should just prohibit threatening christian ads (like it is here and where i usually live) and then nobody would have to waste money on a campaign like this! And there would be no problems – cuz its a personal thing

    Best

    Chris Says:

    @#21

I don’t see how it’s threatening or insulting towards Christians or people with belief in god in general! It isn’t telling you there is no god, and certainly isn’t telling you something bad will happen unless you agree with it – unlike the adverts that sparked this whole campaign. Sure – you could say it is disrespectful as some people build their whole lives around their belief in God and the teachings of the bible – but if they also believe in free speech, they should happily ignore it. The worst such statements do it make people think. If that’s such a bad thing then there’s something wrong with our society.

  23. 23
    MaxX Says:

I never said it’s threatening… And why not just ignore the threats from christians and not waste the freakin money on a huge campaign?

The Atheist’s Guide is a mix of humorous and poignant contributions from over 40 various prominent atheists. It’ll make an ideal Christmas gift for your atheist friends. Your religious friends will love it too, or, even better, it’ll put them in a foul mood for Xmas! So a win-win situation! More info on the Facebook group:

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=128903634833

Your support will not only maintain the profile of atheism in the UK, it will also help raise funds for the very worthy THT charity. Please note that the contributors, and Ms Sherine, have waived payment for their considerable input into the “Guide”.

Thank you, and please pass this message on to everyone you know!!

[My apologies if you already know about the Guide!]
